BWTS Condition Assessment Before Vessel Purchase or Delivery
Updated
A purchase-related BWTS assessment should separate document review, observed equipment condition and demonstrated operation. A current certificate or a running display does not, alone, establish the system's maintenance condition or future service expenditure.

Key takeaways
- Configuration and maintenance records
- Known defects and closure evidence
- Available inspection/demonstration scope
- Prioritised follow-up work and limitations
Review the technical record
Request system identity, installed configuration, service history, calibration records, known defects and relevant testing reports. Check whether outstanding recommendations were closed. An absent record should be reported as missing evidence, not automatically interpreted as proof that the underlying maintenance was omitted.
Define the inspection opportunity
Specify accessible equipment and whether an operating demonstration is available. Identify restrictions imposed by cargo operations, tank condition or vessel schedule. The assessment report should distinguish observed condition from functions that could not be demonstrated; it should not imply an unrestricted inspection where access was limited.
Translate findings into a work plan
Separate immediate technical actions, routine maintenance, consumables and potential replacement investigations. Cost or availability estimates require identified components and an actual quotation. The inspection supports a purchase or handover decision but does not replace the vessel's statutory survey or required biological compliance evidence.
Illustrative procurement scenario
During a pre-delivery inspection, records are available but the required operating demonstration cannot be performed. The report separates documentary findings, observed condition and untested functions. The buyer can then request a later demonstration or price a defined follow-up. A useful assessment does not need to manufacture a complete pass where the inspection opportunity was limited.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Purchase/handover objective, available records, inspection location and demonstration opportunities. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Can a condition assessment guarantee future BWTS reliability?
No. It reports the evidence and condition available within its scope. Future operation, maintenance and changing component condition remain relevant.
