BWTS Maintenance Shutdowns: Isolation, Reinstatement and Restart Scope
Updated
A maintenance order should distinguish safe isolation, the technical intervention and subsequent reinstatement checks. Completing a component repair does not automatically demonstrate that the complete system is ready for every operating mode.

Key takeaways
- Vessel permit and isolation responsibilities
- Component and configuration intervention record
- Applicable reinstatement checks
- Outstanding demonstrations and reporting
Establish vessel-controlled isolation
Identify the relevant equipment and the vessel's permit, isolation and access procedures. The appointed parties must understand where their responsibilities begin and end. This planning article does not provide an isolation procedure or authorise bypassing interlocks, electrical protections or chemical-handling controls.
Record intervention boundaries
Document removed components, disturbed connections, settings and consumed materials. Identify any work requiring a separate specialist or approval route. Unrecorded changes make later diagnosis and configuration reconciliation more difficult, particularly when several contractors work during the same port or yard period.
Specify reinstatement evidence
Define required inspections, instrument checks, functional demonstrations and records under the applicable procedures. State which conditions were available and which tests remain outstanding. An annual instrument calibration certificate is one deliverable; it should not be used as a blanket restart or biological-compliance authorisation.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A component is replaced during a shutdown, but the vessel cannot provide the required operating demonstration before departure. The intervention and completed checks are recorded, with the remaining demonstration assigned explicitly. The maintenance report does not become a blanket operational release. Vessel procedures and applicable requirements govern the next action.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Equipment affected, proposed intervention, isolation arrangements and restart evidence required. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Does repair completion authorise immediate ballast operation?
Operational release follows the vessel's applicable procedures and required checks. The service report should state what was completed and any remaining limitations.
