Remote BWTS Diagnostics: Evidence Transfer and Service Boundaries
Updated
Remote diagnostics can improve fault assessment when the vessel provides identifiable, time-aligned evidence. It cannot replace physical inspection or a required calibration merely because a technician can view a control screen.

Key takeaways
- Original logs and common time basis
- Mode, fault and configuration context
- Approved secure communication
- Onboard escalation and next-action record
Prepare a controlled evidence set
Include original alarm logs, operating mode, timestamps, instrument readings and relevant configuration information. Identify the time basis used by each system. Screenshots should be labelled with their context; an isolated display value may omit standby, fault or maintenance status essential to interpretation.
Protect access and configuration
Use approved communication arrangements and avoid sharing credentials in an RFQ. Any remote access must follow the vessel/operator's security controls. Technical advice should distinguish observation from an authorised intervention; neither an email exchange nor a screen-sharing session authorises bypassing protections or changing approved treatment parameters.
Define the escalation threshold
State which findings require onboard inspection, component testing or manufacturer-specific assistance. Retain the diagnostic record and recommended next action. Sea Clean can use the evidence to prepare attendance and parts, but a remote assessment should not be represented as a complete physical service or calibration certificate.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A screenshot shows a low reading, but the accompanying status record identifies standby rather than active measurement. Supplying both records prevents the isolated number from being interpreted as proof of treated-water condition. Remote assessment can then specify what additional evidence or onboard check is required, without changing operating parameters or issuing a calibration certificate from a screen image.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Diagnostic evidence index, affected equipment, secure contact and next available port. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Can remote support issue a calibration certificate from screenshots?
Screenshots alone do not demonstrate that the applicable calibration method was performed. Reporting must reflect the actual work and evidence.
