BWTS Sensor Calibration: Specifying Range, Units and Acceptance Criteria

Updated

A calibration request should identify the instrument's measurement function, configured range and reporting units. Acceptance criteria must come from the applicable equipment or approved procedure, not from a generic percentage selected for the quotation.

Key takeaways

  • Measurement function and units
  • Instrument and configured ranges
  • Applicable method and criteria
  • Control-loop scope and report limitations

Distinguish related ranges

Record instrument capability, configured output range and the operating range relevant to the task. These may differ. Include the local display units and control-system engineering units where a signal interface is part of the work. The same numerical reading can have a different meaning under another scale.

Specify the method basis

Provide the current manual or procedure reference and any customer reporting requirements. The service provider should identify suitable reference equipment and the checks required by that method. Do not request arbitrary test points as though they necessarily establish calibration across the complete operating range.

Review the reported result

The certificate should make clear what was measured, how results are expressed and which criteria were applied. Record limitations affecting the conclusion. Calibration of a sensor does not automatically validate scaling elsewhere in the control chain unless that additional work is explicitly included.

Illustrative procurement scenario

The measuring device and receiving display are documented with different configured scales. The calibration order identifies both and separates instrument results from interface verification. This prevents a satisfactory local measurement from being interpreted as proof of the receiving indication. The accepted scope states which part of the chain was assessed and which remains outside the work.

Sea Clean service and quotation requirements

Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.

Include the following with the email request: Instrument data sheets, configured ranges, units, method references and requested reporting. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can the control-system display use a different range from the sensor?

It can, depending on configuration. Identify both ranges and include interface verification where required rather than assuming that one certificate proves the entire chain.
