BWTS Calibration Procurement: Reference Standards and Traceability Evidence
Updated
Traceability requirements should be specified as evidence requirements for the actual calibration method. Terms such as certified standard, accredited service and traceable result describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable sales labels.

Key takeaways
- Reference type and method
- Identification and validity evidence
- Actual provider and claimed scope
- Connection between reference and reported results
Identify the reference function
Determine whether the method uses a solution, reference instrument or other defined reference. Record its identification, validity and applicable documentation. The required evidence depends on the measurement and procedure; a reagent bottle used in normal operation is not automatically a calibration reference.
Specify claims precisely
Ask what reference identification and supporting documentation will accompany the result. Where accreditation is required, identify the actual provider and relevant scope. Sea Clean does not claim laboratory accreditation; an independent laboratory's status must remain attributed to that laboratory and its applicable activities.
Connect references to results
The calibration record should identify the references used and any limitations relevant to interpretation. Avoid requiring a generic uncertainty statement without a supported method and evidence. Procurement should obtain a defensible record, not a collection of labels that cannot be connected to the instrument or performed work.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A purchaser requests an accredited certificate but the quotation only identifies a documented reference solution. The manager asks which provider and scope support the accreditation requirement. This resolves the mismatch before attendance. A well-documented reference remains useful, but its presence alone does not make the entire service activity accredited.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Instrument methods, reference-document requirements and any specified reporting or accreditation needs. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a certified solution make the whole service accredited?
No. Reference documentation and accreditation of a service activity are separate matters. Identify the provider and scope behind each claim.
