BWTS Calibration Planning: Rotating Installed and Spare Sensors
Updated
A spare-sensor rotation plan can reduce the time an instrument is unavailable, but only when compatibility, calibration status and reinstatement requirements are controlled. A calibrated spare is not automatically ready for every installed measurement point.

Key takeaways
- Device equivalence and intended duty
- Separate serial-based records
- Calibration/storage status
- Exchange and installed-check documentation
Identify equivalent devices
Compare manufacturer, model, revision, range, materials, connections and required configuration. Record the intended tag or measurement duty for each spare. Similar external appearance or a shared system brand does not establish functional equivalence.
Control calibration and storage status
Maintain separate records for installed and stored devices, including serial number, calibration evidence and relevant storage conditions. Determine whether time, storage or the applicable procedure requires additional checks before installation. The spare's history should remain visible rather than being overwritten by the installed tag.
Document the exchange
Record removed and installed serial numbers, date, configuration actions and required functional checks. Update both the vessel register and the spare inventory. The rotation reduces logistical downtime only when it preserves the evidence required for the installed measurement and applicable operating arrangements.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A spare has valid device-specific evidence but requires a different installed configuration from its previous duty. The exchange plan includes identity, configuration and required checks. The spare's certificate remains linked to its serial number while the vessel records its new tag. The rotation preserves traceability instead of transferring paperwork between devices.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Installed/spare inventory, certificates, proposed exchange sequence and vessel dates. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Can a spare inherit the removed sensor's certificate?
No. Calibration evidence belongs to the identified device. The exchange record links the spare's own evidence to its new installed position.
