BWTS Calibration Work Orders: Local Measurement and Control-Loop Verification

Updated

Instrument calibration and control-loop verification should be specified as separate but related tasks. A local measurement can be correct while the value received or displayed by the BWMS control system is incorrectly interpreted.

Key takeaways

  • Sensor-to-display chain
  • Signal type, units and configuration
  • Authorised verification procedure
  • Separate instrument and interface evidence

Identify the measurement chain

Map the sensor or analyser, signal interface, receiving input and operator display. Record relevant units and configuration identifiers. Avoid assuming that a signal discrepancy proves sensor drift; the fault may relate to scaling, wiring, communication status or interpretation elsewhere in the chain.

Define authorised verification

Specify the applicable procedure and responsibilities for any signal or functional checks. Maintain vessel controls for safety-related equipment and operating parameters. This is a work-order distinction, not an instruction to inject signals, alter setpoints or bypass protective functions without the required authorisation.

Report findings separately

The record should identify instrument results and any additional interface checks performed. If a loop could not be demonstrated, preserve that limitation. A certificate should not imply that every alarm, control function and process response was verified when the actual work covered only the measuring device.

Illustrative procurement scenario

The analyser displays a plausible value while the control system shows an inconsistent number. The work order requests instrument assessment and an authorised interface check as separate lines. Findings can therefore identify whether the discrepancy belongs to measurement or interpretation. Replacing the sensor solely because the two displays disagree would bypass that distinction.

Sea Clean service and quotation requirements

Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.

Include the following with the email request: Instrument identities, interface drawings, observed display differences and required verification scope. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does an instrument calibration certificate prove PLC scaling?

Only if the relevant interface verification was included and documented. Otherwise it supports the identified instrument work, not the entire control chain.
