BWTS Sensor Calibration: Onboard and Workshop Logistics
Updated
The choice between onboard and workshop calibration depends on the instrument, applicable method and vessel arrangements. Procurement must include removal, transport, reinstatement and any required installed checks—not only the calibration bench price.

Key takeaways
- Instrument-specific method suitability
- Removal and reinstatement responsibility
- Transport/custody and operational impact
- Workshop record and installed checks
Establish method suitability
Identify the instrument and its manufacturer's requirements. Determine whether the necessary conditions and references are available onboard or whether the device requires a workshop or manufacturer route. A supplier's general ability to calibrate sensors does not establish that every device can be treated by the same method in situ.
Plan the complete movement
Allocate removal, safe handling, packaging, transport, custody and return delivery. Identify the impact of the instrument's absence under the vessel's applicable operating requirements. Do not assume that a temporary absence is acceptable merely because the device has a booked workshop appointment.
Define reinstatement evidence
Record installation identity, connections and any required functional or interface checks after return. Keep the workshop certificate linked to the vessel's equipment register. A bench result and an installed-system demonstration answer different questions and may need separate reporting lines.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A sensor can be assessed in a workshop, but its removal affects an installed function required during the vessel's next operation. The plan therefore covers timing, custody, return and applicable installed checks rather than accepting the bench turnaround alone. Commercial transport efficiency cannot determine whether the vessel may operate with the instrument absent.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Sensor identities, method requirements, removal arrangements and vessel routing. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Is workshop calibration always more complete than onboard work?
No. Suitability follows the instrument and required method. The scope should address both the calibration and any installation-related evidence needed.
