Annual BWTS Sensor Calibration: VGP Applicability in Service Contracts
Updated
Where the relevant 2013 VGP provisions apply, ballast-water monitoring equipment calibration has an annual minimum and additional manufacturer- or condition-based requirements. A service contract should identify applicability rather than present this as an identical rule for every vessel worldwide.

Key takeaways
- Vessel and jurisdiction applicability
- VGP provision and current VIDA status
- Manufacturer intervals and drift triggers
- Instrument-level methods and records
Use the actual permit provision
The 2013 VGP section 2.2.3.5.1.1.3 addresses ballast-water monitoring equipment calibration. It requires applicable sensors and equipment to be calibrated at least annually, with frequency also governed by manufacturer recommendations and drift. The provision recognises that some sensor types may require more frequent calibration.
Check the transition and jurisdiction
EPA's interim guidance explains that existing requirements continue until the EPA and USCG VIDA regulations are final, effective and enforceable. Verify current status and the vessel's applicability when ordering work. A historical permit expiry date or a competitor's general annual-service statement is not sufficient evidence of the current obligation.
Translate the rule into an instrument schedule
List applicable instruments, manufacturer intervals, abnormal-condition triggers, methods and records. Distinguish this from IMO survey/performance-check requirements and other vessel obligations. Sea Clean provides annual instrument calibration and certificates; the contract should preserve any shorter interval or additional work required for the specific equipment.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A fleet agreement proposes annual attendance for every instrument, while one device's applicable manufacturer recommendation requires earlier work. The instrument schedule retains that shorter requirement instead of treating the commercial visit frequency as controlling. The VGP annual minimum, where applicable, is a floor alongside other stated requirements, not permission to ignore equipment-specific intervals.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Applicable trading requirements, instrument register, manufacturer intervals and requested certificates. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Does annual service satisfy every calibration requirement?
Not necessarily. Applicable manufacturer recommendations, drift or other requirements may call for earlier work, and a service visit must actually include the identified calibration tasks.
