BWTS Flow Instruments: Calibration, Indication and Totalisation Scope
Updated
Flow measurement, displayed flow and accumulated volume should be distinguished in the service scope. An instrument assessment does not automatically demonstrate that every totaliser or operating record uses the same scaling and time basis.

Key takeaways
- Instrument/display/totaliser mapping
- Units and time/operation boundaries
- Applicable method and operating access
- Separate findings for each assessed function
Map the required quantities
Identify the flow instrument, local display, receiving system and any accumulated-volume function relevant to the enquiry. Record units, configuration and the period represented by each value. A difference between recorded totals may involve start/stop boundaries or data handling rather than a single sensor error.
Establish a feasible method
Provide the current equipment procedure and available operating conditions. The service provider determines the suitable calibration or verification approach for the instrument and installation. Do not assume that a workshop certificate or a comparison with pump documentation demonstrates installed measurement performance under all conditions.
Specify separate evidence
Request clear identification of instrument work, indication/interface checks and any totalisation assessment performed. Record limitations where the operating window prevents a required demonstration. Keep vessel operational records linked to the actual measurement chain without rewriting historical totals simply to remove a discrepancy.
Illustrative procurement scenario
The vessel compares a flow indication with an accumulated volume covering a different operating interval. The service request records both quantities and their time boundaries before attributing the difference to calibration. The resulting work can distinguish measurement, indication and integration issues rather than ordering a sensor adjustment to force unrelated records into agreement.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Flow instrument details, totalisation arrangement, discrepancies and required reporting. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Does flow-meter calibration also certify the accumulated volume?
Only to the extent covered by the actual method and documented work. Indication, integration and record handling may require additional assessment.
