BWTS Pressure Instruments: Calibration and Switch-Test Scope
Updated
A pressure transmitter and a pressure switch have different functions and may require different service records. The work order should identify whether the task concerns measurement accuracy, switching behaviour or another functional check.

Key takeaways
- Device type and installed duty
- Applicable test or calibration method
- Isolation and interface responsibilities
- Device-specific result and limitations
Identify the device and duty
Record the model, serial, measurement range where applicable, installed location and operational function. Distinguish a continuous measurement from a discrete switching device. A fleet list describing both as pressure sensors can obscure the procedure and reporting required for each.
Specify the applicable test
Use the current equipment documentation and vessel work requirements to define the method. Identify access, isolation and any interface verification. This procurement distinction is not an instruction to alter switch settings or protection thresholds; changes require the applicable authorisation and technical basis.
Keep results meaningful
Report the measured or observed quantities relevant to the device and method. Do not describe a completed switch function test as a full pressure-transmitter calibration, or assume that one certificate covers both. Identify unresolved findings and any protective-system implications through the vessel's established process.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A requisition lists two pressure devices under one sensor-calibration heading. One provides a continuous measurement and the other performs a switching function. The revised schedule identifies different procedures and evidence. This prevents the same generic certificate wording from hiding whether the required test was actually performed for each device.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Pressure-device list, models, functions and required test/calibration scope. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Should pressure switches appear in the calibration register?
They may be included in the broader instrument-maintenance register, but their required test and reporting should be identified accurately rather than assumed identical to transmitter calibration.
