EC BWTS Feed-Water Salinity: Operating Conditions and Service Assessment
Updated
Review low-salinity EC BWTS symptoms using the installed system's feed, operating limits and instruments—not a universal salinity rule or invented workaround.

Key takeaways
- Use the actual variant's approved documentation.
- Distinguish main water from generation-feed conditions.
- Identify the supporting measurements and their locations.
- Do not invent salt/dose/interlock workarounds.
- Separate calibration evidence from process assessment.
System-specific salinity requirements
Electrochemical designs can use different feed and generation arrangements. A manufacturer's permitted operating conditions are not automatically another brand's limits. Consult the applicable installed-system documents and identify the exact variant before interpreting a low-salinity symptom.
A register classification such as electrolysis does not provide the complete operating envelope. The relevant documentation may distinguish main ballast-water conditions from the electrolyser feed. Describe both where they differ, rather than using one port-water reading as the whole operating case.
Measurement parameters and sampling locations
Identify conductivity or salinity instruments, their locations and their role in the system. The measurement at the main inlet may not describe a separate generation-feed stream. Provide instrument tags, recent readings and the corresponding operation mode.
If measurement reliability is in doubt, review the instrument method and current calibration/check evidence. Do not silently equate an uncertain supporting measurement with a proven process limitation. Keep the instrument finding separate from the wider assessment of the generation arrangement.
Approved feed arrangements and protective functions
An EC system may have installation-specific feed provisions, controls or restrictions that must be followed. This article does not prescribe adding salt, changing dosage or bypassing an interlock. Any proposed intervention needs the actual procedure and appropriately competent review.
When asking for assistance, send drawings and the applicable manual section alongside the alarm sequence. Do not improvise a workaround based on a different vessel's experience. Even units with a common maker can have different fitted modules and approved operating arrangements.
TRO observations and operating-history correlation
A TRO reading alone does not establish why treatment behaviour changed. Include the point sampled, sample availability, analyser status, operating mode and relevant feed/flow evidence. Describe whether the symptom is persistent, intermittent or associated with a specific stage.
If analyser calibration is due, that can be scoped as one part of the review. A valid instrument result does not establish that every process condition is suitable, while an instrument fault does not by itself prove that the generation process has failed.
Service planning and compliance-evidence requirements
The requested result might be a calibration certificate, a sample-system check, process troubleshooting or advice on the appropriate responsible party. Identify those outcomes separately. Sea Clean does not provide a universal low-salinity permission or claim authority to approve an altered operating mode.
Give the vessel route and alternative working windows if attendance is needed. A later call may support a practical visit, but urgent equipment or regulatory needs cannot be postponed simply for route savings. Confirm scope, access and the applicable due-date basis.
Technical work package and quotation requirements
Sea Clean provides annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, TRO measurement support, consumables, spare parts and technical diagnostics for all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants. Quotation records comprise vessel/IMO, system configuration, instrument tags and serial numbers, required tasks and deliverables, last calibration, due dates, port/berth, ETA/ETD and agent. Supporting documentation includes nameplates, current instrument schedules and relevant service records. Separate equipment, component, diagnostic and reporting requirements enable a defined vessel work package and clear allocation of responsibilities.
Sea Clean can often reduce attendance costs through coordinated fleet planning. Multiple vessels in the same area, or sequential ship-to-ship attendance along an efficient route, can share travel and mobilisation expenditure. Route assessment considers ETA/ETD, instrument due dates, work duration, access, transport and consumable requirements. Vessel-specific labour, parts, findings and calibration certificates remain separately identified; savings are assessed for the actual schedule rather than expressed as a universal percentage.
We service all EC BWTS systems, all manufacturers and variants. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently. Attendance planning, component compatibility and reporting requirements are specified in the vessel work package. Other-brand OEM authorisation, laboratory accreditation and regulatory approval are not implied.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one minimum salinity for all EC BWTS?
No. The installed design, feed arrangement and applicable documents determine the operating case. Do not apply another system's limits by analogy.
Does a TRO calibration resolve every low-salinity alarm?
No. It addresses identified measurement equipment. Feed and generation conditions may require a separate technical review.
Can Sea Clean issue an annual calibration certificate?
Sea Clean provides annual BWTS instrument calibration and calibration certificates. Each certificate documents the vessel and instrument identity, calibration date, method, reference identification, results, adjustments and applicable limitations. As-found and as-left results distinguish initial condition from post-intervention performance. The next-due basis follows the installed-equipment requirements; drift, repair or abnormal findings may require earlier work. Instrument calibration documentation is distinct from BWMS type approval, class/flag approval and biological D-2 compliance evidence.
