Electrochlorination BWTS: System Classification and Service Identification

Updated

Identify EC and related electrochemical BWTS families correctly before requesting TRO calibration, annual certificates, compatible spares or vessel service.

Request EC calibration, a certificate, spares or fleet service

Key takeaways

  • Identify the BWMS and analyser separately.
  • Keep direct, side-stream and related electrochemical architectures distinct.
  • Check variant-specific manuals and delivered equipment.
  • Do not label UV or chemical-only systems EC.
  • Define the result and attendance window before ordering.

System and instrument identification

A useful service request starts with the installed BWMS maker, exact model, serial and applicable manual. The analyser has its own maker, model, serial and method. A ship can therefore have a familiar treatment-system name but a different measurement package from another vessel in the same fleet.

Do not turn a product-family name into a parts order. Changes in generation, approved component options, instrument replacement or a retrofit may affect the work. Nameplate photos, current drawings and the service history can prevent incompatible standards, reagents or replacement sensors arriving onboard.

Direct and side-stream process architecture

Techcross's published ECS and HYCHLOR descriptions illustrate the difference: direct electrolysis places treatment in the main water path, while indirect treatment generates concentrated oxidants in a smaller stream for introduction to the ballast flow. Those architectures do not imply identical feed arrangements or maintenance tasks.

Ask where generation, injection and sampling take place. Identify treatment-stage and discharge-stage instruments separately. A fault visible in a main-line TRO reading may originate in the sample route, the analyser, feed-water conditions or the process; a family label cannot select the cause.

Electrocatalysis, electrodialysis and model variants

Headway describes OceanGuard using advanced electrocatalytic oxidation and OceanGuard Sim as side-stream electrocatalysis. TeamTec describes OceanSaver with electrodialysis. These are useful families to include in an electrochemical service network, but not by replacing their published terminology with an invented universal process.

The dated USCG register also identifies conventional electrolysis families and separately named variants such as HiBallast NF/HyB, EcoGuardian NF and HYCHLOR 2.0. Consult the delivered-unit documentation rather than treating a grouped register row as an as-built drawing.

Technology classification and EC-generation options

UV, ozone, chlorine-dioxide and bulk-chemical treatment should not be classified as EC just because they disinfect water or measure residual oxidants. Aquarius EC and Aquarius UV, for example, are distinct treatment classifications. The same caution applies when a corporate group owns products using several technologies.

For a family with an optional EC-generation module, confirm that the module is actually fitted. An inTank chemical-only configuration must not be described as onboard electrochlorination. Legacy installations also need explicit generation and support-status identification instead of an implied current-production claim.

Service deliverables and quotation specification

Define the intended result: annual instrument calibration and a certificate, compatible consumable supply, a repair, process troubleshooting or biological testing coordination. The tasks can be planned together, but one result cannot stand in for another. A corrected analyser reading is not a system type approval.

Attendance planning requires port, berth or anchorage, agent, dates, calibration deadlines and the available operating/isolation window. Additional vessels support shared mobilisation assessment. Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including unlisted systems; historical component availability is specified separately in the quotation.

Technical work package and quotation requirements

Sea Clean provides annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, TRO measurement support, consumables, spare parts and technical diagnostics for all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants. Quotation records comprise vessel/IMO, system configuration, instrument tags and serial numbers, required tasks and deliverables, last calibration, due dates, port/berth, ETA/ETD and agent. Supporting documentation includes nameplates, current instrument schedules and relevant service records. Separate equipment, component, diagnostic and reporting requirements enable a defined vessel work package and clear allocation of responsibilities.

Sea Clean can often reduce attendance costs through coordinated fleet planning. Multiple vessels in the same area, or sequential ship-to-ship attendance along an efficient route, can share travel and mobilisation expenditure. Route assessment considers ETA/ETD, instrument due dates, work duration, access, transport and consumable requirements. Vessel-specific labour, parts, findings and calibration certificates remain separately identified; savings are assessed for the actual schedule rather than expressed as a universal percentage.

We service all EC BWTS systems, all manufacturers and variants. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently. Attendance planning, component compatibility and reporting requirements are specified in the vessel work package. Other-brand OEM authorisation, laboratory accreditation and regulatory approval are not implied.

Frequently asked questions

Does service coverage include EC systems not listed in this directory?

Yes. Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including unlisted and legacy installations. Nameplates and current equipment documents identify the required work and components.

Is every listed brand supported as an authorised OEM agent?

Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent. Other manufacturers are serviced independently; service coverage does not imply other-brand OEM authorisation.

Can Sea Clean issue an annual calibration certificate?

Sea Clean provides annual BWTS instrument calibration and calibration certificates. Each certificate documents the vessel and instrument identity, calibration date, method, reference identification, results, adjustments and applicable limitations. As-found and as-left results distinguish initial condition from post-intervention performance. The next-due basis follows the installed-equipment requirements; drift, repair or abnormal findings may require earlier work. Instrument calibration documentation is distinct from BWMS type approval, class/flag approval and biological D-2 compliance evidence.
