Why Does a CLX-XT Show MA While the TRO Display Still Works?
Updated
The XT fault table defines MA as a 4–20 mA output enabled with an open loop. Local measurement and downstream signal transmission are separate functions. A working display does not prove that the BWMS controller receives the measurement.

Key takeaways
- A local display does not establish remote signal delivery.
- Establish whether the analogue channel is required.
- Do not disable a required control signal to clear MA.
- Signal tests and analytical checks have different purposes.
- Keep concurrent reagent renewal separately documented.
- Close out transmission at the actual controller.
Identify the signal path
Confirm whether the installed controller uses analogue output, digital communication or another arrangement.
Preserve the instrument tag and wiring drawing. A display value can exist even when a configured analogue loop is open, so diagnosis must include the actual destination and not stop at the front panel.
Check the documented warning meaning
MA is listed as a self-clearing level 3 condition in section 10.1.
The manual's correction refers to wiring or disabling an unused output. An output is not unused merely because another screen displays TRO; the approved control arrangement determines whether it is required.
Protect the control function
Before electrical tests, identify what a lost signal does to treatment, neutralisation and alarms.
Do not bridge terminals or disable a required output to remove the warning. Competent personnel must follow isolation and the installed electrical instructions, including avoiding unintended operation of connected controls.
Separate electrical and concentration checks
Loop continuity, transmitted current and receiver response address transmission.
A suitable reagent/sample comparison addresses the analytical value. Adjusting the chlorine slope cannot restore an open wire, and buying new indicator does not correct the receiver or field connection.
Use consumables for the right test
If a concurrent annual service also requires fresh chemistry, specify the correct reagent separately.
Record both local and controller readings once transmission is restored. This allows the close-out to distinguish a repaired signal path from any independent measurement or reagent condition.
Reagent supply is a distinct item if the analytical check also requires fresh chemistry. Specify any separate 09991 renewal during loop service
Escalate with complete loop evidence
Send the wiring diagram, required channel, warning history and observed controller state for review.
Sea Clean can coordinate instrument integration work alongside EC service. A cleared MA warning should be supported by the required downstream response and documentation, not only by absence of a code.
Include the wiring diagram and controller response, not only the local display. Coordinate MA fault and downstream signal verification
Frequently asked questions
What does MA identify in the XT fault table?
An enabled 4–20 mA output with an open loop.
Does a normal display prove the analogue loop works?
No. Local measurement and transmission are separate.
Can I disable output to clear the fault?
Only if it is genuinely unused under the approved configuration; not to bypass required control input.
Can chlorine calibration repair a broken loop?
No. Establish electrical transmission independently.

Request spares, calibration or ballast-water testing
Include BWMS brand/model, vessel/IMO number, port/terminal, date/ETA and scope or part numbers. These links prepare an email draft; you must send it yourself.
- Request a parts quote — Sensors, TRO reagents, calibration kits and replacement parts. Confirm compatibility, availability and delivery for your installed system.
- Request a calibration booking — Annual instrument calibration with a calibration certificate for the work completed. OEM instructions, drift or applicable rules may require earlier work.
- Request testing coordination — Arrange sampling and testing with an appropriately qualified party for your IMO D-2, commissioning or other stated purpose.
Authorised Headway agent. Other-brand enquiries are independently reviewed; no OEM authorisation is claimed. Sea Clean is not an accredited laboratory or approving authority. Calibration does not demonstrate biological D-2 compliance. Attendance, testing scope and parts delivery are confirmed per enquiry.
