BWTS Spare-Parts Planning: Criticality and Minimum Stock
Updated
Minimum stock should reflect failure consequences, installed equipment, expected consumption and replenishment opportunities. A universal list of expensive BWTS components is not a substitute for a vessel-specific criticality assessment.

Key takeaways
- Function and consequence classification
- Consumption and failure history
- Complete replenishment route
- Storage life and periodic stock review
Classify the operational consequence
Identify which failures prevent a required function, which consumables have predictable demand and which repairs require specialist attendance. Use the vessel's maintenance and operating requirements. Do not assume that carrying a spare makes continued operation acceptable after a failure.
Assess replenishment exposure
Consider actual trading routes, component availability, transport constraints and storage conditions. Separate quoted supplier lead time from the complete period required to deliver onboard. Items with limited life or controlled storage need a different policy from durable components with infrequent demand.
Review stock against evidence
Track usage, faults, replacements and unused inventory. Update the minimum after configuration changes and changes of trade. Sea Clean can quote identified spares and coordinated service; stock levels should remain an operator decision based on actual equipment and risk, not invented universal failure rates.
Illustrative procurement scenario
An infrequently used component has a difficult replenishment route, while a regularly consumed reagent has a limited useful life. The inventory policy assesses them differently. Carrying more of both is not automatically efficient: the component addresses repair exposure, while reagent quantities must also consider validity, consumption and practical delivery opportunities.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean services all EC BWTS manufacturers and variants, including annual instrument calibration, calibration certificates, diagnostics and spare-parts support. Sea Clean is an authorised Headway agent; other manufacturers are serviced independently.
Include the following with the email request: Installed equipment, current stock, usage history and planned trading route. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Should every vessel carry the same critical spares?
No. Installed configuration, trading pattern, maintenance requirements and replenishment exposure determine the appropriate inventory.
