Ballast-Water Testing: Laboratory Capacity and Attendance Scheduling
Updated
Testing logistics should reserve the analytical receiving window as well as onboard attendance. Sample collection, transport and laboratory availability must form one feasible sequence under the method's requirements.

Key takeaways
- Analytical parameter list
- Laboratory receiving arrangements
- Method-specific handling constraints
- Alternative dates and escalation contact
Identify the actual analytical work
Provide the testing purpose and parameter list before requesting laboratory capacity. Different analyses can require different containers, preservation, processing locations and timings. An indicative onboard assessment and a laboratory analytical package should not be scheduled as though they have identical receiving or reporting requirements.
Work backwards from receipt
Ask the responsible laboratory to specify collection-to-processing constraints and receiving arrangements. Then assess discharge time, vessel access, transport and any cross-border handling. Do not invent a general holding-time limit: it depends on the analyte and method. A viable courier booking alone does not establish that sample conditions remain acceptable.
Manage capacity changes
Identify a contact for weekends, revised discharge times and rejected or compromised samples. The quotation should describe what happens if the vessel misses the receiving window. Sea Clean can coordinate the service parties and vessel schedule, but analysis availability and release of results belong to the appointed provider's actual process.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A sample collection is planned late in a port call, while the nominated receiving facility has a different processing schedule. The provider reviews whether collection, transport and processing meet the applicable method. If not, the sequence is revised before sampling. A courier's willingness to carry the package does not remove analytical timing or condition requirements.
Sea Clean service and quotation requirements
Sea Clean coordinates ballast-water sampling and testing with appropriately qualified laboratories and service parties. The quotation identifies the analytical provider, method, reporting scope and vessel attendance. Sea Clean is not an accredited laboratory.
Include the following with the email request: Testing scope, planned discharge date, laboratory receiving requirements and alternative vessel calls. Multiple vessels in the same area or along an efficient route can be assessed for shared mobilisation. Prices, component availability and attendance arrangements are stated in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Can samples always be collected now and analysed later?
No. Collection and processing must remain within the applicable method and laboratory acceptance requirements. Agree the sequence before sampling.
