TRO Calibration

TRO calibration ensures the accuracy of sensors and meters in Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS), verifying that they measure residual oxidants correctly. This process involves comparing sensor readings with a known standard solution to adjust any discrepancies, maintaining compliance with type-approved specifications.

Precision calibration is essential for reliable BWTS operation, ensuring accurate monitoring and regulatory compliance.

BWTS Calibration Regulations

To ensure compliance with ballast water treatment regulations, your system must operate correctly and be calibrated annually. Proper calibration verifies that sensors and control equipment function accurately, as per manufacturer guidelines.

As stated in the Vessel General Permit (2013) 4.4.3.5.1.1.2, all applicable sensors, including TRO, pH, and DO probes, must be calibrated at least once a year—or more frequently if drift is detected. Regular calibration maintains system reliability and regulatory compliance.

BWTS Calibration & Compliance

Vessel owners/operators must follow manufacturer guidelines for sensor calibration, either onboard or by sending equipment for servicing. Some probes may require electrode replacement every four months for maximum accuracy. Ballast water discharge is prohibited when sensors are offline.

Systems with automated shut-off controls must undergo an annual functional test, following a manufacturer-developed protocol, with a copy kept onboard at all times.
