VDR Service and Annual Performance Testing: Separate the Work Packages
Updated
VDR fault repair and an Annual Performance Test are not the same service. The order should identify the recorder, connected sources, symptoms and required approved test arrangement. Electrical support for cabling or power can assist the project, but it must not be presented as a substitute for the applicable recorder-specific performance testing and documentation.

Key takeaways
- Recorder and software identity
- Affected sources and preserved records
- Electrical/specialist work split
- Correct APT and repair deliverables
Identify the recorder and affected inputs
Provide manufacturer, model, software information, current fault messages and relevant service history. List connected navigation, audio and other sources implicated by the fault. Do not assume that a visible normal status proves every input is being recorded correctly. Preserve records under the owner's procedures, particularly where an incident may be involved.
Coordinate physical and specialist work
Allocate cable, supply and installation tasks separately from recorder configuration and approved testing. Confirm who has the necessary equipment-specific access and authorisation. If another bridge system is being replaced, include its recorder interface in both projects. Otherwise two individually completed jobs may leave a recording gap between them.
Specify accepted documentation
Name the required performance-test deliverable and responsible provider, alongside ordinary repair records. Record the actual configuration and outstanding items. A general technician's service sheet should not be relabelled as an APT document. The vessel's management team should retain the documents needed for its applicable survey and operating requirements.
Illustrative procurement scenario
A bridge equipment upgrade changes one recorder input. The owner adds interface verification and the required specialist work to the programme. This avoids assuming that the recorder remains correctly integrated because neither the new equipment nor the recorder displays an obvious alarm.
Sea Clean electrical work and personnel enquiries
Sea Clean supplies electricians for vessel installation, repair and project support, with electrical personnel hire and technical crewing enquiries also welcome. The proposal defines the work, competence, supervision and any required specialist or approved-provider involvement. Attendance, personnel availability and commercial terms are stated for the specific assignment.
For this enquiry, include: VDR identity, faults, affected interfaces, recent bridge changes, test due date and requested electrical/support scope.

Frequently asked questions
Can general electrical repair be sold as a VDR APT?
No. The performance test must meet the applicable equipment and approval requirements and be documented by the appropriate provider.
